Nature’s masterpiece

Creating the New Zealand South itinerary brought back some very happy memories. In fact, this is one of the most incredible journeys I’ve ever done. Instead of taking public transport, however, we bought a beat-up Toyota which had been converted into a campervan. Most nights were spent in empty DoC campgrounds, where we had stupendous views all to ourselves.

It took a long time to create this itinerary. Firstly, because a lot of time is required in South Island in order to do it justice. Secondly, because I’ve chosen to not use hire car for the Budget version, which therefore required significant adjustments due to the rarity of public transport (as well as missing out Stewart Island, although it is possible to get to Invercargill on Intercity buses).

New Zealandโ€™s South Island is a destination for appreciating the power and magnificence of nature. Little time is therefore spent on this itinerary in the cities. All budgets also go on one of the Great Walks โ€“ the huts that you have to stay in along the way may not be luxurious, but theyโ€™re certainly part of this amazing, unforgettable experience.

This country remains one of my favourites. If you are a fan of the great outdoors and have a sense of adventure (and all the right walking gear!) then Iโ€™m sure it will be a favourite of yours too.
